Years has issued a voluntary recall of all Years Signature Meals following reports of dogs developing sudden bilateral dry eye, potentially linked to buckwheat - an ingredient used in all Years recipes (between 6.3% and 7.2% depending on the recipe).
As of 16th August 2026, 57 suspected cases had been reported out of roughly 40,000 customers (0.1%). Years issued the full recall on 17th August 2026.
What to do
- Stop feeding Years fresh meals immediately, whether your dog is experiencing symptoms or not.
- Do not feed the meals to any other dog or animal.
- Do not donate or sell the meals.
- Contact your vet if your dog shows any symptoms.
Symptoms to look out for
- Excessive blinking or squinting
- Continuous pawing at the eyes
- Thick discharge from the eyes
- General discomfort around the eyes
If symptoms have not resolved within a few days, contact your vet and mention this recall.
Refunds and collection
Years will arrange a free collection of any unused meals and apply a full credit to your account. Subscriptions have been automatically paused for six weeks while recipes are reformulated with quinoa in place of buckwheat.
Investigation
The investigation is being led by Years' food safety team alongside independent experts, including a root cause analysis specialist, a toxicologist, and an RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Clinical Nutrition. UKAS-accredited lab testing has been conducted for heavy metals, mycotoxins, alkaloids, pesticides and veterinary drug residues.
