Email alerts and your account

For recall alerts, we hold your email address, subscription status and any sanitised campaign source, medium and campaign used to measure where confirmed signups came from. If you ask to be told when a product is rated, we also hold the brand and product names you entered and the status of that one-off request. If you watch foods for recipe changes, your account holds your email address, those foods and when you last signed in.

There is no account password: signing in uses a single-use email link. We use these details only to provide the messages and account features you requested, not for unrelated marketing. Confirmation, unsubscribe and unwatch links let you control each subscription. We keep suppression records where needed to honour bounces, complaints and opt-outs.

Photos, ratings and site usage

When you use photo scanning, your label photo is sent to an external label-reading processor so it can read the label. The photo is not stored by Open Dog Food. We do not build a server-side history of your photographed ingredients or ratings. To enforce scan and public-endpoint limits, we store daily-salted IP hashes with request times, outcomes or counters. These abuse-prevention records are not a user account or a rating history.

Aggregate rating-tool events record an allowed action, page, day and, where present, a sanitised campaign source. They do not include your photo, ingredients, barcode, email or a cross-session visitor identifier. The site also records pageviews, outbound clicks and votes. Voting and commenting use a random browser cookie for up to one year so repeated actions can be controlled.

We use Google Analytics to understand visits to the site. Google may receive page, device and browser information under its own privacy terms.

Comments and messages

When you comment, we hold the comment and any name or email address you choose to provide. Your email is not published. Comments may be shown publicly after moderation. When you contact us, we hold the message and the contact details you supply so we can respond and manage the request.

Service providers

Amazon SES sends our emails. Our hosting and database providers process the information needed to operate the site. We do not sell your personal information or share it with dog food brands for their marketing.

Your choices and deletion

Use the unsubscribe or unwatch link in an alert email to stop that subscription. To delete your formulation-watch account, remove a product-rating request, or ask about comments and other information, contact us from the relevant email address where one exists. We will review the request and confirm what we can remove. Aggregate or daily-salted records may not be linkable back to you.
